Working Holiday (417)
Twelve months in Australia, funded by work along the way, for eligible passport holders aged 18 to 30 and up to 35 for some countries. Specified work can turn one year into three.
Requirements
What the 417 asks of you.
Dependent children cannot accompany you on this visa. Your first application must be lodged from outside Australia, and travel should wait until the grant is in writing.
An eligible passport
Held by nationals of participating countries and jurisdictions, including the UK, Ireland, Canada and much of Europe and Asia. Your passport decides whether you belong here or in the partner subclass 462.
Aged 18 to 30 at application
The window extends to 35 for some passports; we confirm which limit applies to yours. Standard health and character requirements apply, and you need funds to carry the first stage of the trip.
Work and study within the limits
Work any job, anywhere in Australia, capped at six months per employer unless the Department permits longer in writing. Study is capped at four months. The visa allows travel in and out across its 12 months.
Second and third years
Three months of specified work, evidenced across at least 88 days on your first visa, unlocks a second year; UK passport holders are exempt. Six further months of specified work on the second visa can unlock a third.

Identity, evidence of funds, and health or insurance material where it is asked for, gathered once and checked.
Lodgement and decision
We lodge from outside Australia, decision-ready, and you book travel only once the grant is in writing.
Second and third years
Specified work evidence is assessed day by day against the requirement before any extension application goes in.
