Requirements

What the visitor streams ask of you.

Where you lodge matters. Apply in Australia and you must be in Australia when the visa is granted; apply outside and you must be offshore at grant. The Business Visitor stream is lodged and granted offshore only.

600 Tourist

Tourist stream

For holidays, sightseeing and visiting family and friends. You need a genuine intention to visit temporarily, enough money for the stay and the journey home, and to meet health and character requirements. Visas can be single or multiple entry, commonly with stays of up to three months at a time.

600 Business Visitor

Business Visitor stream

For business visitor activities: conferences, negotiations, meetings and exploratory business visits. You need a genuine business reason to visit and a background that fits it. The stream does not allow work or selling goods or services to the public, and it is applied for and granted outside Australia.

600 Genuine visitor

A visit that ends

Decision makers weigh your ties at home, your immigration history and your funds against the claim that the visit is temporary. Where your visit is genuinely temporary, we assemble the evidence that demonstrates it.

600 Parents

Longer stays for parents of Australians

Parents and step-parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens may be granted Tourist stream visas of up to five years with multiple entries, staying up to 12 months at a time and no more than 12 months in Australia in any 18-month period. Adequate health insurance is required for these longer visas.

The pathway

How we run your visitor application.

01

Stream and side of the border

We confirm the right stream and whether to lodge in or outside Australia, since where you lodge sets where you must be at grant.

02

Evidence

Funds, ties to home, itinerary and any invitations or business letters, assembled to show a genuine temporary visit.

03

Lodgement

Your application goes in decision-ready, with honest and complete answers throughout.

04

Decision

If granted, the grant letter sets your entries, stay periods and conditions. We walk you through them before you travel.
