Australian citizenship
The Citizenship Test
The last two appointments of the journey: a test most adults sit, and a ceremony where citizenship actually happens.
The appointments
What stands between approval and the pledge.
The test is studied for, not feared: the questions come from a published booklet, and preparation is most of the game.
Most adults aged 18 to 59
The test applies to most applicants aged 18 to 59. Children do not sit it, and exemptions exist, including for permanent physical or mental incapacity.
Rights, responsibilities, life in Australia
Questions are based on the official citizenship test resource booklet: the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, life in Australia, and what it means to be Australian. It can, and should, be studied beforehand.
Original documents, checked in person
The test sits inside an appointment with the Department where your identity and original documents are checked. We prepare the document set so nothing stalls on the day.
Where citizenship happens
After approval, citizenship completes at a ceremony where you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge. Applicants aged 16 or over attend, with very few exceptions, and an Australian passport can follow once the certificate is in hand.

Study

The appointment
Original documents checked and the test sat, prepared from the official booklet.
The pledge
On approval, the ceremony, then the certificate in your hand.
